Exercise while WFH

Are you a work-from-home enthusiast struggling to find the motivation or time to squeeze in exercise during your busy workday? You're not alone. Maintaining an active lifestyle can be challenging when you're juggling work and personal responsibilities. In this blog post, I'll share some effective strategies for staying active and fitting in exercise during your workday, all while keeping it fun and enjoyable.

  1. Start Your Day with Movement

Kick off your day with some light physical activity to wake up your body and mind. This can be as simple as a 10-minute stretch routine, a brisk walk around the block, or a quick yoga session. Starting your day with movement can boost your energy levels and set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

  1. Schedule Exercise Breaks

Treat exercise like any other important task on your to-do list by scheduling it into your workday. Set aside time for short exercise breaks, such as a 15-minute walk, a quick workout session, or even some light stretching. Having these breaks scheduled will make it easier to commit to them and ensure you prioritize your health.

  1. Incorporate Desk Exercises

Who says you need to leave your desk to stay active? Incorporate simple exercises that you can do while sitting or standing at your desk. Try seated leg lifts, desk push-ups, or standing calf raises. These mini workouts can help combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting and keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

  1. Opt for Active Meetings

Instead of sitting through yet another video call, suggest an active meeting whenever possible. Conduct walking meetings with your colleagues, either in person or over the phone. Not only will this help you stay active, but it can also boost creativity and improve communication.

  1. Use a Standing Desk or Exercise Ball

Switch up your workstation by using a standing desk or sitting on an exercise ball instead of a traditional office chair. Both options encourage better posture and can help strengthen your core muscles. Plus, standing or bouncing on an exercise ball can make your workday more engaging and fun!

  1. Take Advantage of Lunch Breaks

Use your lunch break as an opportunity to sneak in some exercise. Go for a walk, jog, or bike ride to clear your mind and reenergize for the afternoon. If you prefer something more low-key, consider a gentle yoga or stretching session to release tension and maintain flexibility.

  1. Set Movement Reminders

It's easy to lose track of time when you're immersed in work. Set reminders on your phone or computer to prompt you to stand up, stretch, or take a short walk every hour. Regular movement breaks can help prevent stiffness, increase circulation, and keep you feeling refreshed throughout the day.

  1. Embrace Household Chores

Household chores may not be your favorite activity, but they can double as an opportunity to stay active during your workday. Use breaks to complete quick tasks like vacuuming, tidying up, or doing laundry. These chores will not only help you maintain a clean home but also contribute to your daily physical activity.

  1. Try Online Exercise Classes

With a plethora of online exercise classes available, it's never been easier to find a workout that suits your interests and schedule. Many platforms offer short, 15-30 minute classes designed to fit into your workday. From high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to dance workouts or pilates, there's something for everyone.

  1. Team Up with a Workout Buddy

Staying accountable is key to maintaining a regular exercise routine. Team up with a colleague, friend, or family member and schedule virtual or in-person workout sessions together. Having a workout buddy can make exercising more enjoyable, provide motivation, and encourage you to stick to your fitness goals.

  1. Create a Home Workout Space

Designate a specific area in your home for workouts and fill it with any equipment or accessories you might need. Having a dedicated workout space can help create a positive association with exercise and make it more inviting to get moving during your workday.

  1. Set Realistic Goals and Track Your Progress

Establish achievable fitness goals and track your progress over time. Whether it's increasing your daily step count, improving your flexibility, or incorporating strength training, having clear objectives will help keep you motivated and focused. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and adjust your goals as needed.

  1. Make Exercise Fun

Find activities that you genuinely enjoy and look forward to doing. This might involve trying new workouts, dancing to your favorite tunes, or exploring outdoor activities like hiking or kayaking. When you're excited about your exercise routine, it's much easier to stay consistent and make it a regular part of your workday.

  1. Prioritize Your Well-Being

Remember that exercise is not just about losing weight or building muscle—it's also about taking care of your mental and emotional well-being. Regular physical activity can help reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your overall quality of life. Make your well-being a priority by consistently incorporating exercise into your work-from-home routine.

Staying active and fitting in exercise during your workday doesn't have to be a chore. By implementing these strategies, you can make physical activity an enjoyable and rewarding part of your daily routine. And soon you'll notice the positive impact on your energy, productivity, and well-being.

One of my personal favorite ways to stay active during the workday is by using a desk cycle or stepper while working. This simple addition to my workstation has helped me keep my body moving, even when I'm tackling tasks that require focus and concentration. The extra movement not only boosts my energy but also makes me feel more engaged and alert throughout the day.

I encourage you to give some of these strategies a try and discover what works best for you. Remember, we're all in this together, and your experiences can inspire and support others on their journey to maintaining a healthy work-from-home lifestyle.

All my best,

xx Silke
